Those of you even somewhat familiar with OmniServer are likely aware that OmniServer is frequently used for accessing information from devices that use ‘non-standard’ protocols including such devices as weight scales, barcode readers, and printers either over serial connections or Ethernet connections.

Over the past several years, we've been working to evolve the OmniServer user experience with the goal of making it easier and more efficient to build a non-standard protocol/driver.

In this video blog post, we will step through the most powerful features of the new visual protocol editor for OmniServer, demonstrating the key enhancements to the user experience that will make integrating your non-standard devices easier and faster than ever.

OmniServer has always made integrating non-standard devices so much easier than the alternative - custom developed code.  OmniServer has been integrating your non-standard devices since 1995 - 25 years of collecting data from process devices that might otherwise have just been black boxes.

Watch this video to learn how the new Visual Protocol Editor takes ease-of-use to the next level with the latest OmniServer release - save up to 40% of your time when compared to building protocols in the legacy editor.  For full release details, visit the News section of the OmniServer website.

Just to summarize, in this video, I've shown you:

  1. The new table-based configuration for most common OmniServer components including items, topic variables, register numbers and more.
    1. How to easily view which protocol message or messages an item, topic variable, etc. is used.
  2. Drag-and-drop support for building protocol messages
  3. Defining "Favorites" - creating your own custom sequences for repetitive protocols to save time and effort.
  4. Creating your own custom layout - only display the protocol components you need to maximize your efficiency when building OmniServer protocol messages.
  5. Switching between the default Visual Protocol Editor and the Legacy Protocol Editor.
